Yet another large-scale recall has been issued by General Motors, this time for a defective ignition switch on some of their best-selling models. The faulty part has so far resulted in dozens of known deaths and many more accidents, causing the automaker to come under legal and congressional scrutiny. The GM lawsuit seeks to collect compensation for consumers that have been affected by this recall.

Issues with the ignition switches installed in a variety of GM automobile models have resulted in many accidents and dozens of deaths. The faulty switches can make the vehicle suddenly turn off during driving, shutting down the engine and the car's electrical systems. This disables the air bags, brakes and power steering system. When these critical systems are disabled, drivers lose control of the vehicle, potentially causing accidents that can result in serious injury or death.

GM Lawsuit: GM might be on the hook for billions over ignition recall injuries

A lawsuit is being pursued against GM over their recent massive ignition recall. The lawsuit has asked General Motors to pay millions of dollars in response to a list of cars from the automaker that were recalled. The ignition of these cars malfunctions and has caused the death of at least 12 individuals. The GM lawsuit alleges that the car company knew of the defect and took months to report the problem to consumers. Engineers had previously reported to the company that car ignitions were turning off when cars were bumped. However, the company waited to address the issue and inadvertently caused the death of several victims.

Wrongful Deaths caused by recalled GM vehicles, lawsuit alleges.

The most serious cases involving the GM recall are those involving wrongful death. These suits are being filed not only because the company sold a defected product, but also because they knowingly concealed this error. If you or a loved one have been a victim of these defected cars, which led to a wrongful death, please contact our lawyers as soon as possible. In the infamous Toyota recall, the carmaker set aside billions of dollars in settlements. In early 2014, Toyota settled these litigation suits for $1.2 billion.

Diminution of Value: how much can this lawsuit get individual GM customers?

Diminution of value refers the calculated damages of a legal dispute or the loss a person incurred. In the lawsuit against General Motors, many individuals are filing claims because they have experienced mental suffering, pain, loss of wages and medical expenses as a result of the ignition defect. In order to qualify, victims must have used one of these defected vehicle by GM, and the faulty ignition must have led to harm or loss. Contacting an attorney is the best way to find out if a person meets this criteria.

History of the GM Recall.

In February 2014, it was revealed that several GM cars were experiencing ignition switch issues that resulted in numerous accidents and a handful of deaths. Since then, GM has issues a recall for over 30 million of their automobiles, making this the largest vehicle recall in history.

Since the initial recall, evidence has surfaced that GM knew about the defective ignition switch several year before hand. Congress has investigated the company, asking why they failed to take steps to remedy the problem sooner. Further evidence showed that the automaker may have known of the issue as soon as 2001. Despite this, they ignored the problem for 13 years even though the company had been notified of the faulty switches through numerous internal memos.

GM Recalls Almost 1.7 Million Vehicles

GM recently recalled close to 1.7 million vehicles due to faulty ignitions. If a car equipped with one of the affected units is driven on rough roads or the key is connected to a heavy keychain, the key can slip out of place in the ignition barrel. This shuts down the engine and leaves the driver without power steering or brakes. While making the car difficult to control would be bad enough, it also deactivates the airbags, making potential accidents far more dangerous. Several lawsuits are being filed against the automaker with some claiming as many as 300 deaths have been caused by this malfunctioning part.

Which Vehicles Were Recalled?

The faulty ignition switch was installed by the factory in seven GM vehicles, and some faulty replacement switches may still be in stock at dealers and parts stores.

  • 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt
  • 2005-2007 Pontiac G5
  • 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada Only)

The Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 were subcompact cars based on GM's Delta platform and sold as four door sedans and two door coupes. These cars have been previously recalled for power steering and padding problems.

In Canada, the G5 was sold under the name "Pursuit" and later "G5 Pursuit."

2003-2007 Saturn Ion

Although it shares the Delta platform with the Cobalt and G5, this is the first time the Ion has been recalled.

2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR

The "Heritage High Roof" is also based on the Delta platform, but was heavily re-engineered to accommodate a large station wagon body. Sold in four door and commercial "panel van" forms, it mixed retro styling with crossover-like capability.

  • 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice
  • 2007 Saturn Sky

These convertible sports cars are based on the rear wheel drive Kappa platform. When it was released, the Solstice was nominated for North American Car of the Year, proving that even the best cars can have some serious underlying problems.

What Should I Do If I've Been Affected?
